Avery Braxton is a sports journalist working for ABC24 Memphis in Memphis, TN. Avery works hard to tell the stories of athletes, teams, and communities in engaging and creative ways. Athletes are people just like anyone in a community and Avery works to paint them as people as much as sports heroes.
My Story
My story began at Mercer University. While in undergrad, I worked in just about every news medium. I reported on the plights of minority business owners as an intern for Georgia Public Broadcasting Macon. I wrote about how interracial families handle adopted children while working for The Telegraph. I helped answer tough questions while working for the Inside City Hall show at Spectrum News NY1. I documented how a grassroots organization was born out of the Black Lives Matter Movement in Atlanta for Next Generation Radio. I did all this while highlighting the play of athletes and coaches for ESPN3 and The Cluster, Mercer’s student paper. All those experiences led me to 13WMAZ, where I spent a year as a general assignment reporter before being promoted to pursue my true passion as the Weekend Sports Anchor during the height of the pandemic. Afterwards I joined up with the Atlanta Falcons, acting as a dynamic, fun and entertaining stadium host during home games in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Around the same time, Memphis, TN came calling. At ABC24, I’ve covered one of the most controversial, exciting teams in the NBA - the Memphis Grizzlies.

My work as a journalist spans as many subjects as the people I've touched. When on the job, I'm always a consummate professional, but ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you that I'm very quick to crack a smile and laugh with my family, friends, coworkers, and story characters. In this line of work, you're only as good as the connections you make, the stories you tell, and the smiles you help create with a job well done. Journalism is fun! I do my best to let my creativity and passion shine through in every piece and I always try to bridge my love for creative writing with the world of digital media. This is my proving ground. Out of Office
I can often be found with my dog, GiGi, looking for our next adventure. I enjoy working out and enjoying a laugh with my family and friends. I’m a big time gamer and a proud brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. I came to Georgia by way of Maryland so I’m a die hard Atlanta and Baltimore sports fan and can often be found yelling at my T.V.
